Getting an information technology degree online can help accelerate this process.
Value of a Bachelor’s in Information Technology
As in many technical fields, not all specializations within IT are created equal. The fastest growing part of the field is Information Security. InfoSec analysts earn an average of $86,170 per year. Of course this is a high stress job and in order to maintain that level of pay you have to be successful and competent at analyzing and securing networks against attacks. The job growth projected by the BLS is 37% which is more than twice as fast as average, compared to the growth rate for systems administrators which is just 12%. SysAdmins earn an average of $72,000 per year, according the the BLS.

Value of Master’s in Information Technology
In IT a graduate degree means less than it does in most fields. It doesn’t automatically open any doors that weren’t already open, but it might pave the way for you. The main reason to enter a graduate program would be to further specialize in a specific area of IT, or to branch out and add new skills to your repertoire. While you could just take an MS in IT graduate program, why not consider Information Assurance or even Information Science generally? These sorts of graduate programs can open up new management and executive opportunities within companies, and also qualify you to do things like starting your own consulting firm, or teaching at the undergraduate level.

IT Job Roles
Technicians
This is the entry level. In this job IT professionals will learn the fundamentals of the field. While advancement within your organization is often possible, you may have to look for a new position once you feel comfortable enough with your skillset and want more responsibility. This is because the next step up is Systems Administration.
Systems Administrators
While this position pays better than that of technician, it’s also probably the most numerous position in the industry currently. This is because medium sized businesses have only one or two systems administrators, and aren’t large enough to need more than one or two technicians to compliment. It’s not a difficult gig to get with a bachelor’s degree and a couple years experience. If you can land a technician job while you’re finishing your degree, you can probably step right into this role almost immediately upon graduation.
Information Security Analysts
Neither technician, nor systems administrator, but with the skill of both, security analysts are specialists. They focus network security and are becoming increasingly crucial in the fight against digital criminals. Not all small or mid-sized businesses can afford to hire their own, so there are several firms to which companies outsource the job of monitoring and securing their networks. The job growth rate for this job is so high, competent security analysts can expend to find a job almost immediately upon graduation, and to advance pretty quickly in the field so long as they keep up on technology. As technology advances, new technology emerges and when that happens, new attack vectors and capabilities are created. Information Security Analysts that want to stay relevant will keep on top of these developments throughout their career. Falling behind isn’t an option.
