San Jose State University is a public university in San Jose, CA. Pervasive systems: Within a few years, computers will collect terabytes of data daily. A majority of all business decisions will rely on this data. To create the capability to collect and interpret such massive amounts of data, computer systems of unprecedented scale and connectivity will need to be built. And new, more scalable techniques for extracting information from massive data streams will need to be developed.
To make this transformation easier, the Computer Science Department has to strengthen its courses in machine learning, distributed databases, software engineering, privacy, and security.
Physical and virtual environments: During the same time, sensors will be embedded in physical spaces (cars, buildings, etc.). These sensors will enable computers to gather models of physical spaces and activities, and to create these models in virtual worlds. As a result, society will overcome critical boundaries that presently deter interaction between people and places. To enable this transformation, the Computer Science Department must expand its classes in sensor networks, computer vision, natural language, embedded systems, computer graphics, creative design, and human-computer interaction.
