Computer Science Degree Programs at Yale University

Yale University appears in our ranking of the Top 50 Master’s in Computer Science Degree Programs.

The Department of Computer Science at Yale University offers programs and opportunities for students with an interest in this form of technology. Students majoring in computer science have the choice between earning a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts. All students must take the same five required courses, but they will then have the chance to take other classes based on their interests. An introductory course that they take in their freshman years is a joint class between Yale University and Harvard University.

Yale asks that BS students take 12 computer science courses and six advanced or intermediate computer science classes. BA students will take 10 computer science classes and four advanced courses. Each program has a senior requirement too, which asks that students take a seminar class or do a final research project. They can also build apps or programs and create new software during their senior years. The senior requirement also asks that students do research on an emerging topic or trend in computer science. The university also has a combined program that allows students to quickly move from the bachelor’s program to the master’s track.

Graduate students who already have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or another technology field can earn a Master of Science in Computer Science from Yale University. This is available as a general track program and with tracks in bioinformatics or computing and the arts. The general program asks students to take eight computer science classes from the 500-level or above. They will also take an independent study course and do a research project. Professors in the program will work with students to make sure they meet the requirements needed to get credit for those projects.

Yale University also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science program. In addition to their classes, students must also take and pass an exam. The university will customize this exam to include questions about the work that students do and their interest areas. In Computer Science 690, students will do a paper based on unique research and present it in the class. They will also need to select a dissertation topic and present it to their advisors. Once they get approval, they can complete and present their dissertation papers or projects.

About Yale University

Yale University is one of the eight schools in the United States known as the Ivy League. It earned this name because of the opportunities it offers students, including the options they have while in school and once they graduate. An active alumni network provides help for students who want to apply and are responsible for conducting admissions interviews. Established in 1701, it became Yale College in 1718. Though the Yale University name applies to all its degree programs, its undergrad programs are still part of Yale College today.

Forbes ranks Yale University as the second best university in America, but Washington Monthly, U.S. News and World Report and ARWU rank it within the top 10 of all American schools. Both USNWR and Times also consider Yale as one of the top 10 colleges in the world. Located in New Haven, Connecticut, its main campus serves as the center focal point of this college town. Yale has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students in all its programs.

Yale University Accreditation Details

Many of the computer science and technology courses that Yale University students take have accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Yale also has accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), which is a form of regional accreditation.

Yale University Application Requirements

With an acceptance rate of less than 7%, Yale ranks as one of the most selective private colleges in the world. The university has a first choice early action deadline of November 1 for those who will attend the university if accepted and a regular deadline of January 2. Students can use the Coalition Application, QuestBridge National College Match Application or Common Application. They must answer the Yale questions on each application and provide transcripts, a letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor, two letters of recommendation from their teachers, their test scores and a mid-year report. Yale also recommends that students conduct an interview, which they can do on its campus. The university can also arrange for students to do their interviews during special events in their high schools and in other locations.

Yale only lets new graduate and doctoral students enroll in a computer science program in the fall. All applications to those programs must arrive at the university by January 2. Those who submit their applications later may receive acceptance for the fall semester the following year. Yale requires transcripts and GRE scores and gives priority to those with the highest scores and grades. It also looks for those who took computer science, technology and engineering courses in college. Students can apply to these programs without having a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Yale charges an application fee and asks students to write a statement that addresses any computer science experience they have.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The total cost of attending Yale University is more than $72,000 a year for undergrads. This includes a tuition rate of more than $50,000 as well as room and board and fees. Graduate students pay more than $41,000 a year to attend Yale. Students can apply for waivers that allow them to skip the fees attached to health insurance, activities and class dues.

Though the cost seems high, Yale offers financial aid packages for all types of students. The average amount given to undergrads is more than $50,000 a year. Students who come from poor backgrounds can get scholarships and other funds that cover all their tuition and fees. Those who need financial aid must use the FAFSA and make sure that they put the Yale code on that form. Yale offers other types of aid for graduate and doctoral students too. Doctoral students can apply for fellowships that come with an award that covers the total cost of tuition and fees. Graduate students can apply for grants and assistant jobs and get loans too. A financial aid package can significantly reduce the cost of completing a computer science degree program at Yale University.
