Computer Science at the University of Tennessee

Students may enroll in several traditional computer science programs at the University of Tennessee, as well as combination programs that award multiple degrees concurrently.
For undergrads, the university offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a five-year BS/MS program in computer science, and an honors concentration for the major. The BS/MS option is a five-year program, and the other majors are designed to take four years.
Students who already have an undergraduate degree and want to enroll in a master’s program at the University of Tennessee will enroll in programs offered by the Tickle College of Engineering. Options include a Master of Science in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Students may also consider the combination program that awards a Master of Business Administration alongside a Master of Science in Computer Science.
One of the unique features of the degree programs at the University of Tennessee is the school’s University Tracking (uTrack) program. The academic monitoring system is designed to ensure students graduate in a timely manner by completing the recommended classes each semester, as well as maintaining an appropriate GPA. To graduate, students must achieve a grade of C or better in all computer science classes, as well as courses in mathematics.
The undergraduate program features classes in theory, systems, hardware, software, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and scientific computing. Classes students may take while enrolled include Computer Graphics, Theory of Computation, Embedded Systems Design, and Data Visualization. There are also classes in web security, pattern recognition, mathematics, and digital archeology.
Students who enroll in the Master of Science program will be able to choose from several concentrations, as well as the option to take a comprehensive examination or complete their degree with a final project and thesis. Concentrations available include computational imaging, data analytics, high-performance computing, software engineering, and many other areas.
Similarly, students in the Ph.D. in Computer Science program will be able to choose from similar and additional concentrations. Concentrations include data mining, compilers, cybersecurity, computer vision, and computational imaging. Admittance to the Ph.D. program requires that students have a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in computer science.

The University of Tennessee is a public university in Knoxville that was founded in 1794 as Blount College. It would be two years before Tennessee became part of the United States. In its more than 200 year history, the university has grown to become the flagship institution of the state’s university system and enroll more than 28,000 students for classes. The university has produced Rhodes Scholars, and one of its graduates was the recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Economics.

University of Tennessee Accreditation Details
The University of Tennessee was first accredited in 1897 and has maintained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges since that time. Regional accreditation allows the university to award college degrees from the bachelor’s through the doctoral level. The university is also authorized within the state of Tennessee to award degrees based on an act passed in 1807. The university has also had the authorization to deliver degrees via the internet since 1998.
Several organizations have accredited and authorized programs at the university. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business has accredited the programs in accounting. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications has accredited the undergraduate program in communications. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation has accredited the programs in art education and agricultural education, as well as other education-related degrees.
University of Tennessee Application Requirements
Undergraduate admission to the University of Tennessee requires an application, official transcripts, standardized test scores, a $50 application fee, and an essay based on one of seven possible questions. Students can apply for an application fee waiver and must fill out an extra form to secure the waiver. There are additional application requirements for students in programs offered by divisions like the College of Nursing and the School of Music.
Requirements for admission to the university’s graduate school include having previously earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school and graduating with a minimum GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. Some programs may require standardized test scores, and some international applicants may need to submit test scores from English language certification. Some programs also require departmental applications in addition to the main university application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for undergraduate residents of Tennessee at the University of Tennessee is $13,264 for the year and is $31,684 for non-residents. Graduate students will pay $13,380 for in-state status or $31,798 for out-of-state enrollment. The law program is $20,168 for in-state students and $38,842 for non-residents. The veterinary medicine program is $29,336 for Tennessee residents and $56,602 for non-residents.
The university’s online undergraduate programs are billed at a rate of $12,756 for in-state students and $14,556 for out-of-state students. Graduate students who enroll in online classes will pay $12,556 for tuition if they’re from Tennessee or $13,906 if they’re from out-of-state. There are some mandatory fees and additional fees that may be added to the total cost of attendance like a maintenance fee and a facilities fee.
Most students will want to apply for financial aid to help cover the cost of attending the University of Tennessee, and the school offers a variety of programs to help students pay for college. For example, the University of Tennessee Consortium Agreement allows students to attend other institutions and receive financial aid through UT. Requirements include being enrolled in at least nine credit hours.
Early submission of financial aid applications helps students qualify for first-come, first-served aid packages. Freshman students interested in competitive scholarships must submit their applications by November 1st, which is the priority deadline. Students may also receive scholarships through their program at the University of Tennessee with divisions like Architecture and Design, Law, and Nursing offering degree-specific scholarships.
