The name change was utilized to better accommodate and complement the many offerings and opportunities at UMGC. The University of Maryland Global Campus was founded in 1974. Back then, the goal of the university was to provide education to all veterans, particularly WWII veterans, military personnel, and other war service members who were returning home from the battlegrounds. In 1949, the University of Maryland Global Campus became the very first university to send its professors overseas to provide educational services to the active-duty personnel who were stationed in Europe.
