As of July 1, 2019, the university has officially been renamed The University of Maryland Global Campus. The name change was utilized to better accommodate and complement the many offerings and opportunities at UMGC. The University of Maryland Global Campus was founded in 1974. Back then, the goal of the university was to provide education to all veterans, particularly WWII veterans, military personnel, and other war service members who were returning home from the battlegrounds. In 1949, the University of Maryland Global Campus became the very first university to send its professors overseas to provide educational services to the active-duty personnel who were stationed in Europe. This tradition is ongoing and now services over 20 countries worldwide.

Since it’s first day with open doors, UMGC has pioneered higher education for learning adults by providing resources not only to the military but to eager students across the globe. The University of Maryland Global Campus has been featured in press sources like The Baltimore Sun, CBS Baltimore, Army Times and Diamondback. At The University of Maryland Global Campus, students have always come first; educating young professionals has always been the goal. UMGC takes pride in creating an environment for working adults who still wish to pursue their education but cannot compromise mush of their daily schedules. The University of Maryland Global Campus has been recognized as one of the top online colleges as well as ranking number 5 in the United States for cybersecurity programs.
