Studying computer science at the University of Maine is possible at the undergraduate or graduate level. For undergraduate students, the university offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science. Students can also pursue an undergraduate minor in computer science. In addition, students may earn a Master of Science in Computer Science or a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science.
For undergraduate students, the choice between a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree depends on how the student wants to earn his or her degree. The B.S. program is more rigid in its curriculum requirements, and the B.A. program has more flexibility in its courses. All students will complete several computer science courses, no matter which degree they choose.
Classes taken in the computer science undergraduate programs include Introduction to Problem Solving Using Computer Programming, Foundations of Computer Science, Object-Oriented Design and Data Structures, and Computer Architecture. Students will also take Applied C Programming, Foundations of Computer Science, and Introduction to Data Structures. Undergraduate students also complete a capstone experience, which is field experience.
Applicants who choose the Master of Science in Computer Science program are able to choose the route of graduating with a master’s thesis or completing a master’s project. The thesis route is the traditional option and is the choice students should make if they want to enter a Ph.D. program after earning their M.S. The thesis option requires more work than the project option.
On the other hand, students interested in joining the workforce immediately after earning their graduate degree may want to pursue the project option. Required core classes in the graduate degree require that students earn a minimum grade of B. Core courses include Software Engineering, Algorithms, and Theoretical Computer Science. Project students will complete three project hours, and thesis students will complete six thesis hours.
Students who already have a graduate degree in computer science may consider the Ph.D. program, which requires completion of 58 semester hours. Classes students will take in preparation for earning their Ph.D. include Theory of Computation, Software Engineering, Database Management, and Scientific Modeling. Graduate students will also take Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, and Algorithms.
About the University of Maine
The University of Maine is a public research university located in the city of Orono in Maine. The university is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution and is only one of a few across the United States with all three designations. Around 11,500 students attend the university, which has operated since 1865. The university was founded after passage of the Morrill Act in the mid 19th century.
The school was originally named the Maine State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. The original campus covered 57 acres and eventually grew to its present-day size of 600 acres. The official colors of the university are dark blue, light blue, and white. In sports, students are known as the Black Bears, and they play in the America East Conference in NCAA Division I games.
University of Maine Accreditation Details
The University of Maine has secured regional accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and some of the university’s programs are also accredited on a programmatic basis. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the American Chemical Society, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology have all accredited programs at the university.
Additional accreditations have been awarded by the American Dietetic Association, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the American Psychological Association. Approvals have also been earned by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Council on Social Work Education, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, and the Society of American Foresters.
University of Maine Application Requirements
Prospective undergraduate students at the University of Maine are encouraged to take college prep and Advanced Placement classes while enrolled in high school, as well as complete recommended classes in English, math, and science. The application process includes a completed application, official high school transcripts, standardized test scores from the SAT or ACT, and a school recommendation for first-year applicants. Students should also submit college transcripts from any college work attempted.
Those who want to apply as graduate students will complete an online application, submit three letters of recommendation, send official transcripts and test scores, and pay a $65 application fee. International applicants must also send a picture of their visa, as well as complete a Certificate of Finances. Some programs have additional application requirements, so students should check with their intended program for those details.
Tuition and Financial Aid
For Maine residents, undergraduate tuition is $9,000 for the year. Out-of-state residents will pay $29,310 for tuition. Nearby residents in states around New England will pay a reduced rate of $14,850, and the online tuition rate is $11,250. The university also charges mandatory fees that range from $2,488 to $2,760 per year, as well as room and board that costs $10,966. The university also expects that students will pay around $1,000 each year for books.
For graduate students, the rate for in-state residents is $8,100 per year, the rate for students who are residents of nearby states is $13,374, and the rate for out-of-state residents is $26,388. The rate for online classes is $10,134. Estimates for books and supplies is $600 per year, and students who live on campus will pay around $10,966 per year.
Students commonly receive student loans through the federal student loan program when they attend the University of Maine. In addition to federal grants and loans, students may qualify for scholarships or Federal Work-Study awards that are based on financial need. Some students may need to apply for alternative loans if they require more funding to cover tuition than has been provided through federal student loans and grants.
All students who submit their application materials by the Early Action deadline of December 1 will be considered for merit scholarships. Students may still receive scholarships if they are accepted at a later date but will only receive funds if they’re available.
