Stony Brook University – SUNY Application Requirements
Students who successfully apply to Stony Brook University – SUNY will have a high school diploma and will have completed several recommended classes in areas like English, social studies, math, science, and a foreign language. Some programs require that students have taken additional classes in certain areas. For example, engineering students need four units of science rather than the recommended three.
Other restricted majors include those in creative writing, music, and business management, as well as several within the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Students must examine the programs in these areas and submit additional items that may include portfolios or auditions. Some programs may also require that students meet certain benchmarks in their standardized test scores and GPAs.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition rates for New York resident undergraduate students at Stony Brook University start at $295 per credit, with a variety of fees also required for each credit taken. In addition to the basic tuition fee, students will also pay an activity fee, college fee, health services fee, and intercollegiate athletic fee to cover the costs of various student activities during enrollment. Students who enroll as out-of-state students will pay a higher tuition rate of $1,031 per credit.
For graduate students, the New York State resident rate is $471 per credit. Like undergraduate students, graduate study enrollees will also pay additional fees like activity fees, college fees, and academic excellence & success fees. In all, the total cost per credit is $603 for NYS residents. Non-resident graduate students will pay a higher tuition rate of $963 per credit but will pay the same amounts for added fees. All students who enroll in more than 12 credits will need to pay a student health insurance fee if they don’t already have health insurance.
Students should submit a FAFSA form if they want to qualify for federal student aid, as well as special programs that give aid to New York State residents. The university offers several scholarships to students that include those for undergraduates, graduates, and students involved in sports programs.
External scholarships are often given to students with financial need or who have demonstrated excellent academic progress in high school or college.
