Students can earn an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology through Davenport University’s online system that prepares them to analyze, manage, and utilize patient care data and health information resources. Another Associate of Applied Science in Networking Technology is available at the school’s main campus in Grand Rapids and at the Lansing and Midland Campuses, while an Associate in Computer Information Sciences is also offered online and at three campuses. These degrees involve approximately 60 to 67 hours of coursework.

Not all master’s degree programs require a computer science or data analytics undergraduate degree. These areas of study usually require 30 to 33 credits of coursework for degree completion. Students can also earm a 12-hour graduate certificate in data analytics.
About Davenport University
Headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI, Davenport University is a private, non-profit university that focuses primarily on educating students in the fields of business, technology, and the health professions. The school offers 14 campuses spread across Michigan as well as an online portal that students can access from anywhere. U.S. News and World Report named Davenport University as one of the nation’s best colleges in 2019, while Money Magazine also named it a “best college” in its 2018-2019 rankings. Founded in 1866 by Conrad G. Swensburg, the school was originally called Grand Rapids Business College and operated under several different names. Davenport University grew rapidly during the last two decades of the 20th century. Today it serves more than 7,000 traditional and online students and offers more than 60 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs through its four colleges.
The school recently became a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), with 22 different sports competing at the NCAA Division II level. Men’s rugby competes in USA Rugby’s Midwest Rugby Union and the Division I level. Davenport’s men’s hockey team also competes at the Division I level in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC).
Davenport University Accreditation Details
The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Central Association of Colleges and Schools has granted Davenport University general accreditation. The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) accredits the Associate of Applied Science and the Master’s Degree in Health Information Management. The school’s Bachelor of Computer Science program is currently seeking accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
One of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Michigan, Davenport prides itself on offering a practical curriculum that allows students to begin taking courses in their major during freshman year and requires all undergraduates to complete an internship in their chosen field. Approximately 95 percent of graduates are employed in their field within six months of graduation.
Davenport University Application Requirements
Davenport University does not list hard requirements for admission. The University has an online application for domestic and international students, with the latter, one can assume that applicants must pass an English proficiency test for admission. The school is considered lightly competitive as 89 percent of applicants are admitted. Admitted students have an average grade point average of 3.2. No information is available about minimum or average ACT or SAT scores of those admitted. Online learners have the same application process. You must include a $25 non-refundable fee with your application.
For graduate admissions, requirements are different for each area of study. For a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, applicants who don’t’ have an undergraduate degree in the field will need to take courses such as Introduction to Programming or Object-Oriented Programming with C# to be considered for admission.
For students pursuing a Master of Science in Data Analytics, they must have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA in engineering, science/math/statistics, computer science or accounting/marketing. A statement of purpose must accompany the application, along with a resume and undergraduate transcripts and a statement of recommendation.
The master’s program in Information Assure and Cyber Security may require some prospective students to take additional 500 level courses if they do not have security certifications. Students must earn a grade of B or better in each of those courses before taking any graduate courses.
Students who wish to pursue a master’s degree in Technology Management must also meet foundational requirements that include courses in information systems security, statistics, and business foundations and must earn a grade of B or better.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition is $767 per semester hour, which comes out to $23,010 per year for full-time students. Online tuition for Michigan residents is $777 per semester hour for Michigan residents and $519 per semester hour for out-of-state residents. Graduate tuition for full-time students is $14,958 for two semesters, while online courses cost $841 per semester hour.
More than 75 percent of students receive some type of financial aid. Davenport encourages students to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid) to determine eligibility for federal student loans and grants.
Davenport awards more than $15 million in foundation scholarships each year. For undergraduates, awards are based on high school GPA and ACT or SAT test scores. Undergraduate scholarships include the Gerald R. Ford Memorial and the Martin Luther King Inherit the Dream Scholarship. Several other scholarships are also available. For graduate students, Medallion, Scholars and Graduate scholarships are available, all tied to student GPA. Community foundation scholarships are also available.
