Dakota State University is known for not being a typical four-year college. It was founded in 1881 and used as a school to teach teachers in the Dakota Territory. Today, it is a technologically-advanced campus. It is a public university and governed by the Board of Regents for the South Dakota System.
DSU specializes in computer information systems, computer management, and other computer-related graduate/undergraduate programs. The school puts special emphasis on preparing teachers on how to use computer technology to learn and teach others. There are over 45 majors available and an extensive graduate program.
DSU is located in Madison, South Dakota, which is a large and bustling community with a small-town feel.

Dakota State University is accredited by the HLC Higher Learning Commission, which offers two tracks for accreditation. Dakota State University Application Requirements
The bachelor’s programs are designed to be challenging, and there is a rigorous selection process. If the student is a high school graduate, they need to either have an ACT score of 18 or more, get a subscore on the Math/Critical Reading SAT of 870, have a 2.6 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or rank in the upper 60 percent of the graduating class. If students do not meet these requirements, they can be admitted on probation.
Along with such, students need a 2.0 GPA or higher in English, advanced Mathematics, Laboratory Science, Social Science, Fine Arts, and Computer Science. If students meet admission requirements but not course requirements, they can be admitted in an Associate Degree program, complete it, and apply for the Bachelor Program.
To apply to the Associate degree level, students must meet the same requirements as the Bachelor degree, though they must also complete their GED with a combined score of 580 or more with a score of 145 for each subject.
To apply for the graduate admissions, students need to have a Bachelor’s degree from an appropriate institution and accreditation. Some programs require specific scores such as GRE or GMAT scores for the MBA program.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Dakota State University offers financial aid to those in need. However, before students can determine if they need financial help, they should understand how much it costs to attend DSU.
For undergraduates in SD, IA, NE, and residents of South Dakota, the total cost each year is going to be about $16,148 while MN residents can expect to pay about $16,255 each year. Non-residents of these states can expect to pay $19,121. These are estimates based on the student’s preferred course.
Graduates can expect to pay $450 per credit hour, regardless of whether it is online or at the University Center.
Because college can be expensive, DSU offers financial aid to their students. Up to 74 percent of their students received financial aid each year, and about $11,000 was awarded during the 2017/2018 school year.
