About Campbell University
In 1887, James Archibald Campbell, a Baptist minister, opened a school for 16 students enrolled in the Buies Creek Academy. By the end of the first term, enrollment had grown to 92 students. It was the first school in this area of North Carolina. The first catalog issued by the school referenced the rural area which would help students avoid “many of the temptations incident to towns and cities.” It also pointed out that the country location would “save our patrons much extravagence in dress.”
In 1900, a suspicious fire destroyed the academy and Campbell fell into a deep depression, feeling as if he could not rebuild. Zachary Taylor Livett came to visit the campus and refused to allow Campbell to remain in bed in discouragement. In an effort to help his friend, Kivett promised to help construct a new brick building on campus, overseeing and supervising every aspect of the reconstruction over the next 478 days. A tabernacle on the property had not been destroyed. Within a few days, Kivett developed plans to renovate the tabernacle for classes that opened in 1901. Kivett came to be known as “a steam engine in britches.” The brick building, named the Kivett Building, opened in 1903.
The outbreak of World War I and the 1918 Influenza Outbreak took its toll on the academy as well as the community. By 1923, there were 620 students enrolled. That same year, D. Rich, treasurer of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, spent the night with the Campbell’s. When asked how he slept, he told the couple that he had not slept well as “Jesus and I talked together most of the night and He told me Buies Creek must live.” Rick died the following year and left one-eighth of his estate to the academy. He also provided $60,000 for the construction of the Carrie Rich Memorial Library in honor of his first wife along with funding for a gymnasium and a memorial building in his honor. These donations led the academy to become a junior college.
In 1925, Campbell sold his interest in the academy to the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina for $28,000 despite the fact that his interest was valued at $56,000 and the school itself was valued at more than $500,000. At the meeting, the name of the school was changed to Campbell College in honor of its founder.
During World War II, enrollment dropped significantly and females were unofficially were unofficially accepted.After World War II, the school became fully accredited and co-educational. In 1961, the school became a senior-college and gained university status in 1979.
Today, 6,800 students attend Campbell University on four campuses as well as online.
Campbell University Accreditation Details
Campbell University is accredted by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Accreditation indicates that the school offers programs that meet or exceed criteria developed by the Commission that indicate excellence. They also agree to periodic reviews to confirm programs continue to be of the highest quality and any areas deemed as needing improvement are addressed immediately. Campbell University Application Requirements
In order to apply for the Associate in Arts in Information Technology Security or the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity must hold a high school diploma or GED. They must submit official high school transcripts or proof of completion of a high school equivalency program. Applicants must also provide official ACT or SAT scores. Personal essays and letters of recommendation may be submitted but are not required.
Applicants who have completed college credits after high school graduation must be in good standing at the last college they attended. They may transfer up to 64 credit hours from a two-year institution, but there is no limit to transfer credits from four-year institutions. The final 32 credit hours of the degree must be completed at Campbell University. Applicants should submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
Campbell University Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition on the Main Campus is $655 per credit hour. Tuition for hybrid classes offered at Fort Bragg, Pope and Camp Lejeune is $275 per credit hour while online classes are $450 per credit hour. All classes on the Raleigh campus are $450 per credit hour. Currently serving members of the military and veterans pay $250 per credit hour for any on campus or online course.
Financial aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. In order to qualify for financial aid, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Because some assistance is merit-based rather than need-based, all students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA regardless of income and the form must be resubmitted each year.
