The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering program begins by building a strong foundation in the basics, including physical sciences, mathematics and computer sciences. After the foundation is established, students enhance their understanding by learning specific techniques and skills. These include logic design, computer organization, operation systems, software design, and algorithms. Electives help students customize their degree, providing a stronger understanding of VLSI, networking and software design. The Internet of Things and Cybersecurity are also covered as part of the program. During their senior year, students engage in a year-long, department-wide capstone design product that combines all information they have learned in an effort to address a real-world problem.
The Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science program provides an understanding of the design and construction of both software and hardware systems used in computing. Students also gain a level of mathematical ability that allows them to analyze computational processes and to analyze problems that require computation to answer. They learn to understand and evaluate the organization, design, and construction of computer systems as well as methods to address problems in the business world using computers. Courses required may include Combinatoric Structures, Computer Systems, Geometrical Algorithms, Algebraic Algorithms and Probability in Computing.
The Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering allows students to take 32 credits of advanced engineering courses in order to prepare them for Ph.D. programs in the field. Students build depth in computer engineering specialization in areas such as hardware, computer architecture, communications, and networks as well as software. A practicum is required which provides students hands-on experience. Courses required may include Computer Architecture, Error-Control Codes, Parallel Computer Architecture, and Advanced Microprocessor Design.
Boston University offers a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems that is available at the Charles River campus, online or in a hybrid format. Students gain an understanding of advanced knowledge in the analysis and documentation of requirements for architecture, design, and implementation of computer application systems. They also gain an understanding of software and computing skills as they relate to database systems, data communications, systems analysis, and design. Students are able to identify current and emerging information technologies, assess where those technologies may benefit an organization and implement those technologies. Courses may include Business Data Communication and Networks, Information Systems Analysis and Design as well as Strategy and Management.
The Ph.D. in Computer Science is for those who wish to become experts in the technical subfield of computer science. Ph.D. students gain practical experience in the classroom while also engaging in research that helps them become visible members of the research community. Graduates are able to set their own research direction, teach and advise students as well as work at the forefront of cutting-edge research in academia. Courses include instruction in algorithms, systems, software, theory of computation, artificial intelligence and computer graphics. An oral comprehensive examination is required to complete the program. Students must also research and defend a dissertation.
About Boston University
Boston University began as Newbury Biblical Institute in 1839. That year, delegates to a Methodist Episcopal conference met in Boston to establish an institute of higher education. The school opened in the Newbury Seminary in Newbury, Vermont. In 1847, the school moved to Concord, New Hampshire, and was renamed the Methodist General Biblical Institute.
The school remained in New Hampshire for 20 years before relocating to Boston. At that time, it was rechartered as the Boston Theological Seminary and women were permitted to attend. This made the school the first in the country to admit women to all programs. In 1869, three businessmen, Isaac Rich, Lee Claflin, and Jacob Sleeper, chartered Boston University and the Boston Theological Seminary became the first department in the new school.
In 1876, the first public demonstration of the telephone occurred at Boston University when then-Professor Alexander Graham Bell transmitted sound from his office to the Boston Athenaeum. In 1902, Edgar Helms, a Boston University graduate, founded Goodwill Industries while teaching applied Christianity at the School of Theology.
Today, more than 35,000 students attend Boston University. It is one of only three universities in the Boston area named to the prestigious Association of American Universities. It is ranked 42nd among national universities by US News & World Report.

Boston University Application Requirements
Undergraduate applicants must complete either the Common or Coalition Application. They must provide official high school transcripts as well as a Counselor Recommendation and School Report Form. A teacher evaluation is required along with official SAT or ACT scores. Transfer applicants must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended as well as a transfer report. They may also be required to provide official high school transcripts. An academic recommendation is also required.
In order to apply to graduate programs at the College of Engineering, applicants must complete an online application and provide all required credentials including official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Two letters of recommendation are required as well. Applicants to master’s level programs must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and for Ph.D. programs must hold a master’s degree or higher. Applicants must provide a statement of purpose and current resume as well.
Boston University Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate full-time tuition is $54,720 per year and tuition for the College of Engineering graduate programs is $54,720 for full-time study.
Boston University offers more than $260 million in financial aid to undergraduate students with 91 percent provided in need-based aid and 9 percent in merit-based aid. Of freshmen who demonstrate financial need, 99 percent receive financial assistance. Financial aid offered in a student’s freshman year is guaranteed for the remainder of their undergraduate study.
